Can Medical X-Ray Film Be Recycled Safely?
Medical X-ray film can be recycled safely when patient information is protected throughout the job. California Film Recycling provides HIPAA-compliant service, including onsite boxing and removal, secure destruction of patient information, and a Certificate of Destruction for your records.
Approve the records before pickup
Have the person responsible for your records decide which files can be removed. Follow your retention policy and keep any records still needed for care, a patient request, or a legal matter.
Approval should identify the files or storage areas clearly. Old dates alone do not show that every record in a cabinet is ready for destruction.
Keep the files secure until we arrive
Leave approved records in their normal secure storage. Moving them into an open hallway or an unattended loading area can expose patient information before the pickup even starts.
Our team can box files where they are stored. Your staff only needs to identify the approved collection and provide access to the room or cabinets.

Privacy covers the whole file
Patient details can appear on film edges, envelopes, reports, and CDs. Taking a name off the outside of an envelope does not remove the information inside it.
We separate film from the other file materials and securely destroy patient information. Tell us if your collection includes additional types of media so the scope of the job is clear.
Keep scheduling details simple
A room number, cabinet count, or approximate box count is usually enough to describe the size of a pickup. Avoid sending patient lists or readable photographs of medical records for an ordinary quote.
If you need to show the storage area, keep names and other patient details out of the photograph. The team needs to understand the collection, not the patients in it.
Confirm your facility's requirements
Some facilities require vendor paperwork or a business associate agreement before records can be collected. Have your privacy or records contact discuss those requirements with us ahead of the visit.
Also tell us who will meet the team and whether there are building check-in rules. Handling those details early helps keep pickup day straightforward.
Keep the Certificate of Destruction
We provide a Certificate of Destruction when the work is complete. File it with the approval to remove the records and the pickup details.
If the archive is cleared over several visits, keep each certificate with the corresponding collection. That makes it easier to show which part of the archive was handled on each job.
