Can X-Ray Films Be Destroyed After Scanning?

Separate scanning from disposal approval

A scanning project changes how records are stored. The decision to destroy the physical films needs its own review, even when the scanning work is finished.

Ask your records lead which originals can be released under the rules and policies that apply. Keep any films with an unresolved requirement out of the destruction collection.

Check the actual digital record

Have the appropriate clinical or records staff confirm that the saved images are suitable for their intended use. Look for missing sheets, incorrect patient matches, and unreadable areas.

For example, a folder may contain several views and a report, while the scan contains only the first film. Finding that gap before collection gives the team time to correct it.

Test whether staff can find the files

Try retrieving several records through the system staff will use after the originals are gone. Opening a file from a scanning operator's temporary folder does not test the finished archive.

Check that the images are stored with the correct patient and study details. Ask the team managing the system to confirm the arrangements for access, backup, and recovery.

Protect both versions during the change

The physical film still needs secure handling after a digital copy exists. Electronic patient information also brings responsibilities for the system where that copy is stored.

Give the physical and digital collections clear names during the project. A staff member should be able to tell which originals passed review and which still need checking.

Remove the approved originals

Once your team approves the films, California Film Recycling can box and remove the facility's files. We sort film from paper, envelopes, and CDs, so staff do not need to separate them for pickup.

Call 951-822-6298 to arrange secure removal of the approved originals. We destroy patient information securely and provide a Certificate of Destruction; your facility continues to manage the digital records it retains.

Quick questions

Does a scanned copy mean the original can leave immediately?

No. Confirm the copy and the requirements for keeping the original before approving destruction.

Who should check the quality of scanned X-rays?

Use the clinical or records staff responsible for deciding whether the images are suitable for their intended use.

Does film destruction delete the scanned records?

No. Your organization separately manages the digital files and the systems where they are stored.
