Is Old X-Ray Film Worth Money?
Old X-ray film can be worth money because many film products contain silver. The value depends on the material you have, not simply how old the box is. California Film Recycling pays by the pound for accepted film and can discuss pricing for your collection.
Why a recycler pays for film
Silver is part of the image-forming material in many traditional X-ray films. A recycling process can recover that silver from the film.
The plastic sheet and its silver-bearing coating are different materials. Payment is based on the film being purchased, not on the weight of a box being treated as pure silver.
Film type makes a difference
A hospital archive, a dental office, and an industrial inspection company may have different film products. Some collections also contain printed images or other materials that look similar to film.
Tell us where the collection came from and share any product names you already have. You can leave mixed files together for a facility pickup; our team handles the sorting.

Age is a clue, not a price
The approximate years in an archive can help identify the film products likely to be there. Older does not automatically mean more valuable, and newer does not automatically mean worthless.
A collection may span several decades or include more than one type of film. Give us the date range you know without spending time checking every folder.
The amount matters too
A few personal X-rays and a room full of records are different jobs. The amount of film helps us discuss the collection method and current pricing.
If you do not know the weight, describe the shelves, cabinets, or boxes. There is no need to move heavy files onto a scale just to make the first call.
Mixed files need a clear weight basis
Film is often stored with paper envelopes, reports, and CDs. Those materials add weight, but they are not all priced as X-ray film.
Ask how the payable film weight will be determined and how payment will be recorded. Our full-service pickup includes boxing, removal, and separation of the approved archive materials.
Call for a price on your collection
We pay by the pound, with pricing that varies by film type, age, and amount. Call for current pricing instead of relying on a rate quoted for a different collection.
Have your location, a rough quantity, and a short description of the film ready. For medical files, also arrange approval for removal; the service includes secure destruction of patient information and a Certificate of Destruction.
