What Is the Difference Between Medical and Industrial X-Ray Film?
Medical X-ray film shows anatomy. Industrial X-ray film shows parts such as welds, pipes, and castings. Both can include silver-bearing photographic film, but the product, contents of the file, and reason for keeping the record can be different.
What medical film is used for
Medical film may hold chest, bone, dental, or other diagnostic images. It is often kept with patient envelopes, reports, and CDs.
Those files can contain private health information on several different materials. A medical film cleanout therefore needs both approval to remove the records and secure handling of the patient information.
What industrial film is used for
Industrial radiography helps inspect a component without cutting it open. The image may show features inside a weld, casting, or pipe.
These films are often organized by job, part, project, or customer. The files may be important to a contract or maintenance record, so the responsible person needs to approve removal.

Both can contain recoverable silver
Many traditional medical and industrial films contain silver in their image-forming layer. However, silver content varies by film product and processing.
You cannot assign one value to all medical film and another to all industrial film based only on those labels. Product information and the actual collection are what matter.
The format does not tell the whole story
Medical film often comes in familiar large sheets or small dental sizes. Industrial film may also come in sheets, strips, or rolls.
Size is a useful description, but it is not proof of the material. Printed images, digital plates, and other items can be stored nearby without being the same kind of film.
The approval process is different
A medical office follows its patient-record requirements and retention policy. An industrial business may need to consider project, customer, or equipment records.
In either case, identify the collection that is approved for removal and keep it distinct from files that must stay. Our pickup team should not have to decide which records your organization still needs.
