X-Ray Film Recycling
Can Unused or Expired X-Ray Film Be Recycled?

Unused or expired X-ray film may still contain recoverable silver. Being too old for its intended imaging use does not automatically remove its recycling potential. Confirm the product with California Film Recycling before deciding how to dispose of the remaining stock.
What does the expiry date tell you?
The expiry date concerns the manufacturer's intended use of the film. It is not a statement that the material becomes silver-free on that date.
A box left after a printer change may therefore be worth discussing even when it cannot be used by the practice. Keep its original label available for the conversation.
Why can unused film still have silver?
Silver-containing imaging material is present in suitable film before the image is made. Unused stock does not need to be exposed or developed to become a subject for recycling.
That does not apply to every medical printing product. Identify the exact film rather than assuming all sealed boxes have the same contents or value.
Should sealed packages be opened?
There is no need to open packages just to request an assessment. Original packaging gives the team a product name and helps explain what remains in storage.
Say whether the stock is sealed, partly used, or mixed with other products. If a box was reused for loose film, explain that its outside label may not match the contents.
What else should be mentioned?
Tell the team about damaged packaging, damp material, or stock from more than one department. Include the rough number of packages rather than trying to count every sheet.
Keep unused supplies separate in your description from patient records. Records need approval for destruction, while spare stock needs the appropriate owner's approval for removal.
Can unused film qualify for payment?
California Film Recycling pays by the pound for eligible film. Pricing depends on film type, age, and amount, so an unopened box does not come with an automatic rate.
Call 951-822-6298 with the product details and approximate quantity. The team can confirm acceptance and explain onsite boxing and removal for the approved collection.
Quick questions
Does expired film lose all recycling value?
Not necessarily. The expiry date and recycling eligibility answer different questions. The team needs the product details before confirming the film's handling and current price.
Should I develop unused film before collection?
No. Do not process or chemically treat stock to prepare it for recycling. Describe it as unused and let the team confirm the appropriate arrangements.
Can partly used boxes be discussed too?
Yes. Say that the package is open and give your best estimate of what remains. You do not need an exact sheet count for the first call.
