X-Ray Film Recycling

Are CR Imaging Plates the Same as X-Ray Film?

CR imaging plates are different from conventional X-ray film. A reader scans the plate, and the plate can be reused. Do not include plates, cassettes, or readers in a film recycling pickup unless their handling has been specifically confirmed.

What does CR mean?

CR stands for computed radiography. It uses an imaging plate and a reader to produce a digital image that can be viewed on a computer.

A conventional film sheet is different: it becomes a physical image kept in the archive. These two materials should not be treated as interchangeable just because both are flat.

Why might plates be stored beside film?

A department that changed systems may have older film records and unused equipment in the same room. Boxes can contain plates, empty cassettes, or parts left after an equipment change.

Describe each group separately when arranging a cleanout. “Old imaging supplies” does not tell the collection team whether you mean records or reusable items.

Which clues can help identify a plate?

Look for an existing product label or a reference to an imaging plate, reader, or cassette. The department's equipment records may help when packaging is missing.

Do not bend, scratch, or cut an unfamiliar sheet to test it. If you are unsure, describe its label and where it was used before deciding how it should be handled.

Does a plate have the same recycling value?

Do not assume that a plate qualifies for the same silver-recovery service as conventional film. It is a different product, and its handling needs to be confirmed.

Ask separately about readers and cassettes too. Agreement to remove film records does not establish acceptance of the equipment used to create those records.

How do you arrange the right collection?

Call California Film Recycling at 951-822-6298 and explain that the room contains film plus possible CR plates. Share the available product names and the approximate amount of each group.

For approved film archives, the team provides boxing at your facility, removal, and sorting. Make clear which items are included in the agreed job and which must remain for a separate decision.

Quick questions

Can a reusable plate be treated as old film?

No. First identify the product and confirm its handling. Reusable plates are different from the conventional film sheets stored as completed records.

What if a box contains both plates and film?

Describe it as mixed and ask for advice. You do not need to damage or dismantle anything to explain what is in storage.

Is a film printed from a CR image also a plate?

No. A physical film print is a separate item from the plate used to capture the image. Identify the printing film when discussing recycling.
