X-Ray Film Recycling
Can You Recycle X-Ray Films That Are Stuck Together?

X-ray films stuck together need an assessment before recycling is confirmed. Tell California Film Recycling about the film type, damage, and amount. Do not pull the sheets apart or use water or chemicals to prepare them; first establish what handling the collection needs.
Why might film sheets stick together?
Moisture can soften some photographic coatings and make sheets stick. Poor storage can also leave film attached to paper, sleeves, or other material.
The appearance alone does not tell you the full cause or whether the collection is accepted. Describe what you can see without trying to separate the damaged layers.
Should the sheets be peeled apart?
Do not force them apart just to make the pile look ready for recycling. Pulling can damage the coating or make a record harder to identify.
Avoid washing, heating, or treating the film yourself. If an image must be saved, that needs a preservation decision rather than preparation for destruction.
What information helps with an assessment?
Say whether the film is damp now or was damaged earlier. Mention stuck paper, broken boxes, a known leak, or other conditions that affect handling.
Give a rough amount and any available product names. If you have photographs of the storage condition, keep patient information out of the frame and ask how to share them.
Are the damaged records approved for disposal?
Damage does not automatically authorize destruction of medical or inspection records. Ask the responsible person to identify which files can leave and which need further review.
For a mixed cabinet, the answer may differ by shelf or file group. Keep those boundaries clear so a damaged area does not lead to removal of records that must remain.
What should happen before pickup?
Call 951-822-6298 and explain the condition before booking collection. California Film Recycling must confirm whether the material fits the service and what arrangements are needed.
California Film Recycling boxes approved files at your facility and handles removal and sorting. Call first to confirm which damaged films we can collect.
Quick questions
Is water-damaged film automatically worthless?
Its appearance alone does not establish recycling eligibility or price. The product, condition, and amount need to be discussed before a value can be confirmed.
Can I soak the film to loosen the sheets?
Do not soak or chemically treat film for recycling. Ask about the collection as it stands so you do not create additional damage or handling problems.
What if the stuck films are still needed?
Keep them outside the approved destruction group and notify the records owner. Preserving needed images is a separate task from arranging film recycling.
