Can Old Mammogram Films Be Recycled?

Old mammogram films may be suitable for recycling once they are approved for disposal. Mammography archives can contain conventional film and printed copies from digital systems. Confirm the actual film type with California Film Recycling rather than treating every mammogram as the same material.

Which kinds of mammogram film exist?

Some mammograms were recorded using conventional film. Others were captured digitally and later printed onto a physical sheet for viewing or sharing.

Both forms can turn up in one archive. The examination name describes the image, but it does not fully identify the film used to hold that image.

Can mammography film contain silver?

Yes. Conventional mammography products include silver-bearing film, and some dry mammography printing products contain silver too. The word “digital” does not prove that a physical print is silver-free.

Use a film product name when it is available. A box label is useful, while an examination date or sheet size provides only part of the picture.

Does an older image still need to be kept?

The person responsible for the medical records should decide which mammograms can be destroyed. Apply the retention requirements and any holds that cover the files before scheduling removal.

Do not decide from appearance alone or assume a newer image replaces every older one. If the office has unresolved questions about a record, keep it outside the approved collection.

What if film came from several providers?

A patient folder may include films supplied by another facility along with the office's own reports. Those films may use different products from the stock your office bought.

Describe the archive as mixed when appropriate. There is no need to open every folder and identify every manufacturer before asking the team about collection.

How are approved files collected?

California Film Recycling boxes approved archives at your facility and handles removal and separation of film from records, envelopes, and CDs. The service securely destroys patient information and provides a Certificate of Destruction.

Call 951-822-6298 with the approximate amount and any known film names. Confirm acceptance for the collection and make clear which files are approved to leave.

Quick questions

Are printed digital mammograms automatically silver-free?

No. Some dry mammography printing films contain silver. Identify the printing product instead of using the digital examination alone to decide its composition.

Can I recycle a mammogram just because it is old?

Age alone does not approve a medical record for destruction. Have the responsible records owner confirm that the file can be removed first.

Do reports need to be removed from the envelopes?

Customers do not need to separate the approved files before pickup. Tell the team what is stored with the film so the collection is clearly defined.
